It's A Slow Fade

This song didn't hit me until I noticed Sydney always wanted me to turn it up at the end so that she could hear the little girl's voice singing a familiar verse, "Oh be careful little eyes what you see..." As I started catching more and more of the song, the responsibility of my parenthood and my life weighed heavy on my heart. And the video is so intense it even made me cry. I am especially struck by the line "for it's the little feet behind you that are sure to follow", and the video makes this so clear.

Although the video clearly defines this song as being about how choices made to commit adultry can ruin a family, I think that is just one specific example of the meaning of this song. I think it can refer to any sin we choose to let ourselves get immersed in, to slowly fade into. Knowing how my kids observe me, for the better part of each and every day, are my actions something that I want their little feet to follow into? I spend a lot of time trying to make sure all their outside examples are good and upright and holy. But what about the examples on the inside?

This song is "Slow Fade" by Casting Crowns. I've printed the words below the video for your clearer understanding. May we all stop the slow fade from giving ourselves over to sin.

Be careful little eyes what you see
It's the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings
Be careful little feet where you go
For it's the little feet behind you that are sure to follow

It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
It's a slow fade, it's a slow fade

Be careful little ears what you hear
When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near
Be careful little lips what you say
For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray

It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day

The journey from your mind to your hands
Is shorter than you're thinking
Be careful if you think you stand
You just might be sinking

It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
Daddies never crumble in a day
Families never crumble in a day

Oh be careful little eyes what see
Oh be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above is looking down in love
Oh be careful little eyes what you see
